What is a straddlebug?

In the late 1800's during the Great Oklahoma Land Rush, a person would use a straddlebug to mark a quarter sections of land they wished to claim. The Straddlebug tripod was commonly constructed from three planks of wood to which the claimant attached his name. It was a way to notify others that a claimant or his agent was on the way to the nearest land office to file a claim.

The following is a scanned copy of a book from the time period of the Straddlebug Tripod. It is 506 images/pages (Almost 50 meg). So it will take a while to load. If you see a black page upon loading it is the image of the book cover.
